Synopsis
God has morbid ways of amusement.
Masterpiece is the story of a silent and introverted artist whose life had been cursed with a deadly spell: his art pieces reflected surreal images of things surrounding him and every single object that made its way to his canvas is erased from reality. When inspired, he would enter a state of trance which he had no control over, unable to remember the artistic process.
New York city has been an inspiration for many artists and he was no exception. On the night of September 10, 2001 he made a black and white drawing of NYC inspired by its amazing skyline, just hours before the unforgettable tragedy of 911.
On the night of January 31, 2003, he had seen in the newspapers that the Space Shuttle Columbia was going to take off the next day. He had been thinking on how humans cling to the self without measuring consequences and how technology has become a new religion, always looking to what can be done, as if our pride as human beings relies on what we can accomplish, but seldom pointing out what should be done, clinging to our desires of the eternal self. His philosophical thoughts led to new inspiration and falling in trance, the space shuttle became the new subject of his artwork. The next day, the Columbia made its final flight to a fatal ending.
Aware that his amazing powers meant more harm than good he isolated himself from the rest of the world, living his life in solitude. No TV, no newspapers, no phone, no contact with the outside world, only the occasional trip to the store. The man had to eat you know.
Born as inherent part of our society, his solitude could only last so long before he would find himself face to face with love, represented by the kindness of a wonderful woman. Being a loving person himself, he is unable to fight against his nature, falling in love with her. But destiny had something planed for him, and love wasn't included. Her charm and beauty inspired him and once again he was tricked by fate. She became the subject of his work, and once again that subject would be erased from reality.
Knowing that he would never find happiness in this lifetime he decided to kill himself by painting a self portrait and trick God's morbid ways of amusement. But fate is no fool, and as he too late realized, his artwork never killed anyone but trapped them inside the canvas for all eternity.
He can't be heard, he can't be seen. He is and isn't. He is present, or is he? Inside the canvas, he became his own masterpiece.
